A man stabbed to death Saturday morning was ambushed in the lobby of his apartment building, police said.

A first-degree murder warrant has been issued for Marko Pandurevic, 22, in the slaying of 25-year-old Dimitry Savenkov.

According to witnesses and security camera footage, a man waited in the lobby of 12 St. Dennis Dr., a mid-rise apartment block near Eglinton Avenue West. and Don Mills Road in Toronto's Flemingdon Park neighbourhood.

When Mr. Savenkov walked in shortly before noon, the man stabbed him and fled, police said.

Mr. Savenkov staggered outside and collapsed in the parking lot. He was taken to hospital, where he later died.

So far, police haven't determined exactly what motivated the stabbing. Given the circumstances, however, it appears to have been a targeted killing, said Detective Sergeant Dan Nielsen of the homicide squad.

"You would think that there was something that led up to his," he said, adding that police are trying to find out more about Mr. Pandurevic. "We know very little. We're still trying to establish what he was doing."

Mr. Savenkov lived with his mother in the building where he was killed and worked from home, selling t-shirts. Mr. Pandurevic is believed to have also lived in the neighbourhood, and he was recognized by area residents, police said.

Both men have had minor contact with police, but there's no evidence to suggest the killing was gang-related, Det. Sgt. Nielsen said.

Mr. Pandurevic is described as white, 5 feet 11 inches tall and 170 pounds. He is considered armed and dangerous and shouldn't be approached, police said.

Mr. Savenkov is Toronto's 34th homicide victim of 2010.
