Crowds gathered along the parade route as revellers take part in the Caribbean Carnival Parade in Toronto, Ont. July 30, 2011.

A man in his 30s has died and a woman is in critical condition after a shooting Saturday evening along the parade route of a Toronto Caribbean festival, EMS officials said.

Toronto Police did not comment on the incident because Ontario's Special Investigations Unit was called in. The police watchdog investigates when police are involved in incidents leading to death or serious injury.

The man and woman, 22, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and were rushed to hospital, said Connie Christie, spokeswoman for Toronto Emergency Medical Services.

An 18-year-old man was also injured in the incident and taken to hospital after a bullet grazed his eyebrow.

The shooting occurred at Ontario Place hours after the parade went by, according to reports.

The annual Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Toronto, formerly known as Caribana, is the largest festival of Caribbean culture in North America. Thousands crammed the sidewalks to watch Saturday's extravagant parade.

Violence has occasionally marred the celebrations in the past. In 2005, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot in Dundas Square while hundreds of revellers were in the area.
