The Globe and Mail's Asia correspondent, Nathan VanderKlippe, has been awarded the 2014 Amnesty International Canada award, honouring outstanding reporting on human-rights issues in Canadian media.

Mr. VanderKlippe was recognized Thursday night for his reporting on China's treatment of its Uyghur minority.

"The range of Nathan's work is breathtaking," said David Walmsley, The Globe's editor-in-chief. "We are immensely proud of his work, and pleased that the judges have recognized one of the most conscientious, hard-working reporters around. We are very proud of Nathan."

Mr. VanderKlippe reported from China's remote Xinjiang region, where the largely Muslim Uyghur population faces severe restrictions on religious and cultural expression. The region has been the scene of terror attacks, which have brought a harsh and sweeping crackdown from Chinese authorities.
