Giant George stood over 7 feet tall on his hind legs

Giant George, with his owner David Nasser, held the record as the world’s largest dog until this year. He died in his home in Tuscon, Ariz., on Oct. 17, 2013, just before his eighth birthday.

The Great Dane, posing with Boo Boo, once the world’s smallest dog, measured more than 3 feet 5 inches (104 centimetres) from ground to top of his shoulders and 7 feet 3 inches (220 cm) from tail to nose and weighed 245 pounds (111 kilograms).

George was the runt of his litter, according to media reports, but the enormous but gentle beast grew up to consume 180 pounds of food a month. He slept on his own queen-sized mattress.

The new record holder is another Great Dane, Zeus, of Otsego, Mich. The three-year-old measures 44 inches from foot to shoulder. Standing on his hind legs, Zeus measures 7-foot-4.
