A San Antonio-area police department says its investigation of two football players accused of ramming into a referee during a high school game will take at least a week to complete.

Sergeant Tom Dillard with the Marble Falls, Texas, police department said Tuesday prosecutors have indicated they would be receptive to filing charges if that is what the investigation indicates.

Dillard says if charges are filed, it could be for misdemeanour assault, but that wasn't "chiseled into stone."

The Northside Independent School District is conducting its own investigation into Friday's incident, which was captured on video. It has suspended the players from John Jay High School in San Antonio.

The school was playing Marble Falls High School in Marble Falls, located about 90 miles north of San Antonio.
