A Rwandan man living in Canada is pleading not guilty to participating in the genocide against the Tutsi minority in his country in 1994.
Jacques Mungwarere is only the second person to be tried under Canada's Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act.
Mr. Mungwarere was a former high school art teacher who came to Canada in 2000.
He was arrested in 2009 following an RCMP investigation.
The 40-year-old is accused of participating in a genocidal massacre of Tutsis at a regional hospital and the systematic hunt for fleeing Tutsis in the nearby countryside.
The defence plans to argue that the case against him has been fabricated by other Rwandans with their own agendas.
