The driver of a Land Rover that drove off the road and on to a railway track, leading to the crash of two trains and the deaths of 10 people early this year, was accused in court yesterday of having fallen asleep at the wheel.
In the opening day of his trial in Leeds, northern England, Gary Hart, 37, pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
His Land Rover and the trailer it was towing plunged down an embankment and on to a main railway line in the early hours of Feb. 28. Six passengers and four rail staff lost their lives when the GNER express passenger train plowed into the vehicle and derailed, smashing into a fully laden coal train. AFP
