Former Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty is joining business consulting firm PwC Canada as a senior adviser.

PwC said Thursday Mr. McGuinty will provide strategic advice to clients, "driving thought leadership and profile for the firm, and supporting PwC's efforts to expand and deepen relationships in the business community."

Mr. McGuinty, who previously represented Ottawa South as a member of Ontario's legislature, will be based in Toronto in his new job.

"Dalton brings vast experience, strategic thinking and a unique understanding of many of the markets in which we are looking to grow," Tahir Ayub, markets and industry leader of PwC Canada, said in a statement.

"We believe Dalton's expertise will significantly benefit our clients and the firm."

Mr. McGuinty, a lawyer by training, was Ontario's premier from 2003 to 2013, but resigned during a period of uproar surrounding mounting costs for scrapping two unpopular gas plants.

Since then, he has maintained a low profile, but faced criticism for registering as a provincial government lobbyist last year for school software company Desire2Learn. He was named a senior fellow at Harvard University's Weatherhead Centre for International Affairs for the fall session in 2013.

Mr. McGuinty is not the first former member of his government to join PwC. In 2012, former economic development and trade minister Sandra Pupatello joined the firm as a director of business development and global markets, also in the Toronto office. Her role was described at the time as assisting foreign clients interested in investment in Canada and assisting Canadian clients in investing globally.

Mr. McGuinty said he is "delighted" to be helping PwC pursue opportunities in emerging and innovative markets.

"My lengthy leadership experience, combined with PwC's reputation for helping clients solve their important problems, really complement each other," he said in a statement.
