Goldcorp Inc., the largest gold producer by market value, suspended operations at a mine in Northern Ontario as authorities investigate a fatal accident.

Early Wednesday, a rock fall buried a worker, and the scoop equipment the person was working in, resulting in the fatality at the Musselwhite gold mine at Opapamiskan Lake, the company said in a statement.

"We are fully co-operating with the ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the accident, and are offering support to the individual's family and employees at the mine site," chief executive officer Chuck Jeannes said.

Musselwhite is forecast to produce 250,000 to 270,000 ounces of gold in 2015.

Earlier this week, Goldcorp said it would likely come in at the midpoint of full-year production guidance of 3.3 million to 3.6 million ounces due to mechanical problems at its Pueblo Viejo mine in the Dominican Republic. The mine is a joint venture with Barrick Gold Corp., which operates the mine.
