Louis Vuitton's store of the year - and its Canadian connections

Toronto's Eventscape - a fabrication firm whose motto is 'build the extraordinary' - delivers in Singapore

The southeast Asian city-state of Singapore, long renowned as an international financial centre with a busy port, now aims to become a top tourist destination. Reclaimed land along the waterfront has become the site of the gigantic Marina Bay Resort.

The mixed-use resort - with its three 60-story hotel towers supporting a cantilevered skypark that houses swimming pools, observation decks and walking trails - was designed by Moshe Safdie, an architect born in Israel, raised in Canada and who now works from the United States.

The floating Louis Vuitton pavilion was one of the last portions of the Marina Bay Sands complex to open last fall. The complex geometry of the building, designed by Mr. Safdie, would provide a challenge for Peter Marino, the architect who designed the store's interior.

To manage the light levels inside the all-glass pavilion, Eventscape Inc. of Toronto was called upon to design more than 300 sun panels to protect the luxury goods from harmful UV damage.

Covering 25,000 square feet in total, each custom shade was manufactured in Toronto and then shipped to Singapore for just-in-time installation. The project won the Store of the Year award in the 2012 Association of Retail Environments design awards.

'It feels like you’re inside a Chinese lantern,' says Eventscape’s Gareth Brennan of the unique installation. 'All of those panels made it to site on time. Everything was on time and we finished a week ahead of schedule.'

Back in Toronto, the One Bloor Sales Centre also scooped up a grand prize for its category in the 2012 ARE design awards. Eventscape fabricated and installed feature elements in the condo sales centre designed by Cecconi Simone Inc.

Curved benches circle a projected interactive virtual pond in the central hub of the One Bloor sales centre. 'There’s great design going on all over North America, but there’s no city I’ve worked in that has more cranes up now than Toronto,' Mr. Brennan says.
