Marlys Edwardh, the high-profile criminal and civil-rights lawyer who counts Maher Arar and Steven Truscott among her former clients, had been renting space in the same Toronto building as Sack Goldblatt Mitchell LLP, while operating on her own with a couple of junior associates. Now, she has joined the firm.
"The folks I find here have a breadth of practice which enhances the work I do," Ms. Edwardh said, citing the advantages of working in a larger firm among other experienced lawyers. "It means I can get a problem, look at it, and walk down the hall to someone who I know is going to be like-minded or interested in the same area of law."
Jill Copeland, the former executive legal officer of the Supreme Court of Canada, has also just joined the firm. Before her job with the top court, she was counsel to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
Steven Barrett, the managing partner of Sack Goldblatt Mitchell, said the new additions underscore the firm's growth into areas well beyond its origins as a union-side labour firm, such as civil litigation and criminal law.
"Both Jill and Marlys enhance our capacity and the quality of the legal services we're able to provide on appeals, in administrative law, public-interest litigation generally and civil litigation," Mr. Barrett said.
Meanwhile, Toronto's former mayor, David Miller, is returning to his old Bay Street firm, Aird & Berlis LLP, where he practised before entering municipal politics in 1994.
Mr. Miller, who said he wanted to help green businesses after leaving office, has joined the firm as counsel for international business and sustainability.
