'World's oldest toy' exceeds crowdfunding goal by nearly 8,700 per cent

Kickstarter and Indiegogo, two of the most popular donation-based crowdfunding sites in the country, give creative people the opportunity to fund their projects via online donations or pre-purchasing of products or experiences. Each month, The Report on Small Business will provide a snapshot of the top 10 Canadian entrepreneurial crowdfunding campaigns of the moment. The figures are accurate as of April 1, 2014.

1. ForeverSpin tops are made in Canada out of one piece of high-grade stainless steel for precision and quality. Every spinning top is manually checked with the latest technology to ensure that only perfectly balanced spinning tops will get a serial number, and be allowed to carry the ForeverSpin seal. The Toronto-based team raised $130,447 of its $1,500 goal on Kickstarter.

2. Drake II: Horizons is a 28mm fantasy tabletop war game that blends incredible Dragons, horrifying beasts and powerful chant magic. You choose a great Dragon leader and his lieutenants and servants. The Vancouver-based company behind the game, Action Games Miniatures, has raised $125,585 of its $15,000 goal on Kickstarter.

3. The Helmsman is a timepiece made of marine bronze or steel. Bronze ages based on your experiences, creating your personalised story. Zelos Watches, the Singapore-based company creating the watches, has raised $81,934 of its $30,000 goal on Kickstarter.

4. HJ-Story Book Vol.1 & 2 all started as little doodles for Andrew Hou's girlfriend (now wife). Over time it became a large collection of artwork drawn over the last 3 years, illustrating their thoughts and stories. Now with more than 200 pieces and still growing everyday, they have decided that it's time to turn them into a book and spread the love around the world. The South Korean couple raised to-based team raised $67,495 of their $15,000 goal on Kickstarter.

5. Dysfunctional Systems is a series that revolves around the adventures of Winter Harrison, a student mediator from a utopian world. "Mediators" in Winter's world are those who travel between chaotic worlds, attempting to resolve the issues plaguing them. It has been released for Windows, Mac, Linux and iOS. Currently, there is one episode but the team from St. John's wants to create two more. So far they've raised $67,450 of their $49,000 goal on Kickstarter.

6. Heather Dale's Celtic Avalon is new touring stage show, DVD and youth education program based on the King Arthur legends. Heather has 20 years experience as a songwriter, 15 years running a production company, 10 years touring around North America & Europe. She's already started working on the project, and is mainly looking for community support for the DVD. So far, Ms. Dale and her team has raised $56,500 (U.S.) of its $40,000 goal on Indiegogo.

7. Meet Ryan. The type of cancer that Ryan has comes in two strains, and Ryan has the easier of the two to beat, and some of his treatment plan includes extended travel to the U.S. for a specific Proton Therapy. So far, Ryan's family has raised The Toronto-based team raised $45,685 of its $5,000 goal goal on Indiegogo.

8. Cafe Chat l' heureux will be the first cat cafe in Montreal. Clement Marty, who is behind the project, is an animal lover and discovered the concept during travels to South Korea and Japan. He's so far raised $41,153 of his of its $40,000 goal on Indiegogo.

9. CrossSafe school bus stop sign violation image capture program is a school bus student safety violation awareness project and the first of its kind in North America. The Winnipeg CEO Maurice J. Gregoire has raised $31,050 of his $27,500 on Indiegogo.

10. FitKnix is high-tech athletic underwear for women. Featuring patented Fresh Fix Technology which helps nix moisture and odour. And no pantylines. Knixwear, the Toronto-based startup behind FitKnix has raised $42,307 of its $15,000 goal on Indiegogo.
