Employees at unionized workplaces should not be forced to pay union dues, 84 per cent of Canada's small businesses said in a survey conducted by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).
"When it comes to forcing workers to join the union and to pay union dues Canada increasingly stands alone," CFIB president Catherine Swift said in a news release. "In virtually all other major economies, including Europe and the United States, workers have the choice, a fact that often surprises Canadians who believe our approach to mandatory union dues is in the international mainstream."
CFIB, an association that represents Canada's small and medium-sized businesses, said governments at all levels need to begin consultations aimed at giving workers "the opportunity to exercise their individual right to associate and, as importantly, not to associate."
The survey is based on responses from 9,099 members of the CFIB.
