The capital markets arm of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce is hiring back a familiar face.

Dan Nowlan, who most recently served as chief of staff to finance minister Joe Oliver in Ottawa, is heading back to CIBC World Markets, where he will serve as a vice-chairman.

Since CIBC parted ways with Mr. Nowlan in 2013 there has been a change in leaders‎hip at many levels of the bank.

Victor Dodig has taken over as chief executive officer; within capital markets, Harry Culham is now sole head, following the announcement that Geoff Belsher is no longer with the firm. Roman Dubczak, a CIBC veteran, has since been named the head of investment banking.

Before leaving the bank, Mr. Nowlan served as co-head of equity capital markets.

Lately CIBC has been closely tied to political circles. The bank hired Jim Prentice when he left Ottawa, and often used him as a public face for important speeches. Former chief operating officer Richard Nesbitt has been active in provincial politics, often working behind the scenes for Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne.

Before working for Mr. Oliver, Mr. Nowlan had a history in politics, having previously worked in Ottawa as a ministerial assistant and as chief financial officer for Tim Hudak's successful 2009 bid for the provincial Progressive Conservative leadership in Ontario.
