A Toronto-bound Transat flight from Rome was diverted to the Dublin Airport Friday after smoke was reported in the cabin.

Air Transat Airbus A330-200 carrying 313 passengers and 12 crew landed safely at 4:46 p.m. local time at the airport, Dublin Airport communications manager Siobhan Moore said in a brief interview.

Transat A.T. Inc. spokeswoman Ursula Leonowicz said in an e-mail that flight 315 was diverted for "a precautionary technical verification, following an episode of traces of smoke in the cabin."

The Aviation Herald, a publication about incidents and news in aviation, said the crew on the flight reported smoke in the cabin and that, on approach to Dublin, the smoke and smell had dissipated and that the situation was under control.

The flight was originally scheduled to arrive at the Toronto Pearson Airport at 5:50 PM on Friday.

Flight 315 passenger Matteo Tomassi shared via Twitter that "passengers will stay in a hotel. Next flight is tomorrow at 10 a.m. Dublin time," after he reached out to Air Transat for more information.

"Due to operational constraints, Flight 315 has been rescheduled to depart from Dublin to Toronto tomorrow morning, 10 a.m. local. Passengers will be offered accommodation and compensation. Air Transat regrets the inconvenience, but safety comes first," Transat's Ms. Leonowicz said in an e-mail.

A Transat Airbus 330 flying from Toronto to Lisbon in August, 2001, was forced to make an emergency landing in Portugal's Azores islands after losing fuel. A fire also occurred, either in the air or immediately after the emergency landing. Nine of the 293 passengers on board were injured.

A few days earlier, a Toronto-bound Transat flight carrying 324 passengers and 14 crew members had to be evacuated at the Orlando International Airport before takeoff when smoke was seen coming from the cabin's ceiling lights.

Editor's Note: The original digital version of this article inaccurately referred  to the emergency landing of an Air Transat Airbus 330 in the Azores in 2001, after losing fuel and catching fire. In fact, that fire may have started when the plane arrived on the ground. This digital version has been corrected.
