The International Hockey League and the American Hockey League are about to become one. In a move unanimously approved at an AHL governors meeting yesterday, the AHL announced it will enter into significant expansion before the 2001-02 season. It is believed that the struggling IHL will officially fold after its playoffs, with six of its teams moving to the AHL. The Manitoba Moose, Chicago Wolves, Houston Aeros, Milwaukee Admirals, Utah Grizzlies and Grand Rapids Griffins will survive to join the existing AHL franchises in a single top-level minor league in which each team is affiliated with a National Hockey League franchise.
