A minor-league field manager who screamed homophobic obscenities at an openly gay umpire has resigned from the Edmonton Capitals.

CTV reports Brent Bowers left the Golden Baseball League team after being handed a $5,000 fine and a season-long suspension.

Bowers made the comments to umpire Billy Van Raaphorst during a game on July 31.

Officials for the team, which is owned by the same group that controls the NHL's Edmonton Oilers, say it plans to implement diversity training following the incident.
