Canada's men's sabre team captured silver, while swimmer Kier Maitland, judo athlete Nicolas Tritton and the women's sabre squad each collected bronze medals at the Pan American Games on Saturday.

The four medals pushed Canada's total to 60 - 13 gold, 20 silver and 27 bronze.

And Canada had the chance for one more medal on the day, as Marie-Andree Lessard of Laval, Que., and Sarah Maxwell of Montreal were facing Mexico in the women's beach volleyball bronze-medal game.

The men's fencing team of Philippe Beaudry and Nicolas Mayer of Montreal, and Michel Boulos of Candiac, Que., had to settle for silver after losing 45-34 to the United States in the final.

Maitland, a native of Edmonton, finished third in the 1,500-metre freestyle in a time of 15 minutes 25.28 seconds. Charles Peterson of the U.S., was first in 15:12.33.

"I made my best time," said Maitland. "I was very happy and satisfied with the medal, despite it being a bronze."

Canada has won 14 total swim medals at these Games, one more than the team earned four years ago in Santo Domingo. The swim meet wraps up Sunday.

Tritton, from Perth, Ont., defeated Mariano Bertolotti of Argentina in the repechage final to take the bronze in the 73-kilogram division. He was relegated to the repechage after losing to Leandro Guilheiro of Brazil in the quarter-finals.

"Everyone on the podium today is of world calibre," said Tritton. "My strategy against the Brazilian wasn't good and I think the crowd played a factor. But this is part of the game too."

The women's sabre team of Olga Ovtchinnikova of Toronto, Sandra Sassine of Montreal and Julie Cloutier of Repentigny, Que., edged Venezuela 45-44 in the bronze-medal match.

"I'm very happy to win," said Cloutier. "Our opponents played very well. Venezuela will make a very strong challenge for a place in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. But this bronze medal will build our team's confidence.

Ovtchinnikova said the team was down after losing to Cuba in the semifinals.

"But we were able to pull together to fight for our team," she said. "This is proof that we can do it and will boost our confidence for the upcoming Pan Am championships."

Elsewhere in the pool, Zsofia Balazs of Toronto and Scott Dickens of Ancaster, Ont., each posted fourth-place finishes. Dickens, a gold medallist in the 100-metre breaststroke earlier in the week, finished the 200-metre breaststroke in 2:14.72 seconds. Thiago Pereir of Brazil won the gold in 2:13.51 while Mathieu Bois of Longueuil, Que., was fifth in 2:15.14.

Balazs was fourth in the women's 200-metre butterfly with a time of 2:13.99 while American Kathleen Hersey blew away the field, finishing first in 2:07.64.

Adam Sioui of Trenton, Ont., was fifth in the men's 200 fly in 1:58.63 and Stefan Hirniak of Victoria was seventh in 1:59.11.

Jason Kruger of Calgary and Wes Montgomery of Ottawa will play Cuba in Sunday's bronze-medal game after a 21-15, 21-16 loss to Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos of Brazil in the men's beach volleyball semifinals.

The 3,800-seat Arena Copacabana was barely three-quarters full but nearly all the fans were clad in Brazilian yellow and green and booed every time the Canadians scored a point or stepped up to serve.

"We completely expected exactly what we had today, the booing whenever we touched the ball and whenever we scored a point," said Kruger. "But we both decided to just smile and have fun and not allow it to affect our game."

But Montgomery admitted he was a bit rattled at first.

"I thought I lost the first couple serves because of the crowd," he said.
