When the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres meet tonight, a couple of old foes will share a milestone moment.

Before the game, former Sabres captain and Hockey Hall of Fame member Pat LaFontaine will have his sweater number, 16, retired.

Also, Leafs forward Tie Domi, when he takes his first shift a short time later, will play in his 1,000th career National Hockey League regular-season game.

"It was a dream of mine to play that first game and to play 1,000 is something to cherish," said Domi, a native of Belle River, Ont.

Domi was drafted by the Leafs and played his first game against the Detroit Red Wings during the 1989-90 season.

LaFontaine spent 15 seasons in the NHL and six with the Sabres and will be the sixth player in franchise history -- after Gilbert Perreault (11), Rick Martin (7), Rene Robert (14), Tim Horton (2) and Danny Gare (18) -- to have his number retired.

Domi will be honoured in a pregame ceremony at the Air Canada Centre tomorrow, when the Leafs play the Ottawa Senators.

A few of his old teammates will be there to help celebrate the milestone.

The national anthem will be sung by Canadian rocker Tom Cochrane, one of Domi's friends.
