Branden Grace

South African Branden Grace defeated two of his golfing heroes, Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, in a playoff to win the Volvo Golf Champions on Sunday.

Grace birdied the first playoff hole at The Links at Fancourt to earn his second consecutive victory on the European Tour, having won last week's Joburg Open. Both Els and Goosen parred the hole.

The three players had finished the final round in a tie on 12-under 280.

Grace, a Q-School graduate last month, becomes the first player since Fred Couples to post back-to-back victories in his first two European Tour starts. The 23-year-old only made it into the winner's only field with his victory last weekend.

Els equalled the best round of the day with a 67 to move to the top of the leaderboard while Goosen birdied three of the last four holes to join him after a round of 70.

Grace fired a final round 71 while Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts, who started the day tied for the lead, missed an opportunity for a four-way playoff when his wild drive on the final hole resulted in a bogey, dropping him into fourth place one shot behind the leaders.

Europe's Ryder Cup Captain Jose Maria Olazabal shared top spot after starting with two birdies, but four bogeys the rest of the way dropped him into sixth place, two back of Masters champion Charl Schwartzel who shot a 73 to finish in fifth place.

Seven major champions finished in the top 10 including Louis Oosthuizen (T7) and Ireland's Padraig Harrington (T10).
