Montreal Canadiens defenceman Andrei Markov will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery Canadian sports broadcaster TSN is reporting.

Markov has been practising with the team and was expected to return to action soon. The latest development means his return will be delayed at least another three weeks.

"Despite his progress the team asked him to see a doctor here in Los Angeles," said Habs general manager Pierre Gauthier.

"The decision has been taken that he has arthroscopic knee surgery this week in order to clean up possibly some scar tissue but mostly some debris that have been left there and has been causing a lot of inflamation."

Gauthier said that the structure of Markov's knee appears to be intact and solid.
