The Edmonton Oilers have been singing the praises of Czech-born right winger Ales Hemsky for as long as anyone has been listening. But if you saw Thursday's 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames, you should be ready to join the chorus. It wasn't just Hemsky's speed and passing that befuddled the Flames and caught everyone's eye; it was his determination; his ability to take a hit and get right back into the action. Early in the game, Hemsky was almost steamrolled by Calgary's linebacker/defenceman Dion Phaneuf. No matter. Hemsky got up and carried on. Later in the game, he came blazing down the wing and was ridden like a rocket into the boards by Calgary's other linebacker/defenceman Robyn Regehr. That hit rattled the glass and left Hemsky in a heap. But he got up, skated to the Edmonton bench and gathered his wits. On the Oilers last goal of the night, Hemsky found teammate Daniel Tjarnqvist with a slick pass that was blasted into the Calgary net. Toronto Maple Leafs scout Craig Button was at the game and noticed that Hemsky went right back to the Calgary net, where Regehr was looking to land another crushing blow. "The kid's an outstanding player," Button said of Hemsky, who is playing alongside countryman Petr Syokra. "I'd put him on my top five list of most exciting players in the league."
