Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and an assist and the Detroit Red Wings beat the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in an exhibition game Friday night.
Jan Mursak and Tomas Holmstrom also scored for Detroit (1-1). Jimmy Howard made eight saves, and Joey MacDonald stopped 10 shots.
Jeremy Morin and Brandon Pirri each had a goal and an assist for Chicago (0-2). Corey Crawford made 33 saves.
Mike Modano made his home debut for Detroit.
The 40-year-old Modano, from suburban Detroit, signed a $1.25 million free-agent contract with Detroit over the summer after spending the first 20 seasons of his NHL career with Minnesota North Stars-Dallas Stars organization.
"I think he's just getting comfortable, getting engaged and getting playing," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said.
Modano's best scoring opportunity came late in the second period when he and linemate Dan Cleary broke in on a 2-on-1. Modano carried the puck to the bottom of the left circle and tried to beat Chicago goalie Corey Crawford high. But Crawford knocked the puck away.
"He looks good. He looks good out there," Zetterberg said about Modano. "He looks good on the point (on the second power play unit) with (Niklas) Kronwall. It's going to be better and better but he looks good."
Blackhawks' defenseman Brian Campbell said Modano is a great addition for the Red Wings.
"Just gives them more depth," Campbell said. "They've got three good lines that can score. He's a big body out there who skates well and fits in well with their team."
