Canada's Jennifer Abel and Emilie Heymans wrapped up an impressive opening weekend on the FINA Grand Prix diving circuit with a silver medal in the women's three-metre synchro event Sunday.

Han Wang and Qulin Zhang of China took the gold with 305.70 points. Abel, from Laval, Que., and Heymans, from St-Lambert, Que., were second with 303.60.

"It's definitely a very encouraging performance for us to finish so close to the Chinese pair," Abel said. "The score wasn't our best and you have take into account that the judging here this week was very tough.

"We made a small error on our third dive and that may have been the difference."

Olena Fedorova and Anna Pysmenska of Ukraine were third with 293.70 points.

Canada won three medals on the week. Abel won the three-metre competition on Saturday, a day after Regina's Reuben Ross took bronze in the men's three-metre event.

In the women's 10-metre synchro, Roseline Filion of Laval and Meaghan Benfeito of Montreal were sixth.

In the men's 10-metre tower, Riley McCormick of Victoria and Kevin Geyson of Winnipeg were eliminated in the semi-finals. McCormick was 10th and Geyson finished 12th.
