Canadian gymnast Karen Cockburn will miss the 2014 world trampoline championships because of a broken left ankle.

The three-time Olympic medalist fell while training on Wednesday and fractured her ankle. She had recently returned to competition after taking two years off following the 2012 London Games.

"Karen was doing her optional routine and came down off the trampoline bed and with both feet on the frame pad," Canadian team manager Eran Silberg said in a release.

Cockburn flew home to Toronto the morning after the accident and was expected to have surgery later Thursday or Friday.

The Canadian team is also missing eight-time national men's champion Jason Burnett, who underwent knee surgery just over a week ago, and Samantha Sendel, who withdrew from the women's individual event after experiencing dizziness while training this week. Sendel suffered a concussion earlier this year.

The loss of Cockburn and Sendel leaves Canada with just two entries in the women's individual event: 2012 Olympic champion Rosie MacLennan and Samantha Smith.
