The Montreal Canadiens and backup goaltender José Théodore ended their impasse yesterday, one day before the start of the National Hockey League season, agreeing on a two-year contract.

In 30 games as Jeff Hackett's backup last season, Théodore, 24, recorded a 12-13-2 record with a 2.10 goals-against average, fourth best in the league. He also tied for the NHL lead with a .919 save percentage and recorded five shutouts.

Théodore has played in 65 regular-season games, posting a 21-31-4 mark for the Canadiens, who failed to make the playoffs the past two seasons. Reuters
