Canadian junior hockey team star Jordin Tootoo has been awarded the national Tom Longboat male award for 2002. Tootoo, a member of the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings, was a popular member of the national junior team that won a silver medal in January. He became the first Inuk to be drafted by a National Hockey League team when the Nashville Predators selected him in the fourth round of the 2001 draft. The award, named after the First Nations athlete, is given by the Aboriginal Sports Circle, which brings together the interests of First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples.
