MARKHAM, Ont., Sept. 11 - IBM Canada Ltd. has officially opened the doors of the IBM Software Solutions Laboratory, home to 2,500 employees developing software for IBM customers around the world. The 565,000-square-foot facility was originally expected to house 2,000 employees but that number has grown to almost 2,500. The state-of-the-art facility, with wireless connectivity throughout, will provide room for potential expansion as the Lab continues to develop software for some of IBM's most important software missions. In addition to providing employees with the best productivity tools, the Lab also offers amenities such as bistros, cafes, game rooms, a fitness center and an on-site child care facility. IBM Canada, which built the Lab on an 88-acre site, has been recognized by the Wildlife Habitat Council for its contribution to wildlife preservation and preserving a large portion of the site in its natural state. Natural Resources Canada also awarded the new Lab under its Commercial Building Incentive Program in recognition of an energy efficient building design aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
