An international hackers group says it will release what it alleges are secret documents from Italy's cyber police in retaliation for the arrest of some its members.

The loosely knit hacker group "Anonymous" announced on its website it would post some eight gigabytes of material, including material it says is from the Egyptian transport and Austrian defence ministries.

News agency ANSA quoted the CNAIPIC cyber police Monday as saying they were trying to determine if the documents were authentic and which computers or servers, if any, had been hacked.

Police, however, said the documents were of little investigative significance.

Italian police earlier this month arrested several Italian members of the group after government and corporate websites were hacked.
