Walmart Pharmacies and Vision Centres can help families have an easy transition back to school. The Globe and Mail

This month, Walmart’s Wellness Day will include free consultations and education designed to help parents and their kids and get ready to go back to school

As the back-to-school season approaches, we understand the excitement and preparations that come with it. Parents and caregivers can give students their best start for a successful academic year by ensuring they have all the support they need to stay healthy and protected – and Walmart Pharmacies can help.

At Walmart Pharmacies and Vision Centres, professional health care providers such as pharmacists and opticians can help students and their families with a smooth transition by advising and assisting with immunizations, eye care, as well as refilling of prescriptions (which can also be easily requested through Walmart’s pharmacy app). Pharmacists can also take back old or expired medication.

It’s a great time of year for parents to speak to pharmacists for advice on what over-the-counter medicine they should keep on-hand to better prepare for emergencies. Plus, one-on-one consultations can also help young patients understand the importance of taking an active role in managing their health, including adhering to a medicine regime and learning how to correctly use medical devices, including inhalers, auto-injectors, etc. Lastly, pharmacists can answer questions or offer advice on overall well-being.

The next Walmart Wellness Day takes place on August 19 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. (local time). Walmart pharmacists from coast to coast (excluding Quebec) will be available to provide one-on-one consultations and recommendations about routine immunizations. Pharmacists can provide advice around school support for diabetes, anaphylaxis and asthma, as well as a helpful checklist of things to do to prepare for a healthy start to the new school year. Walmart opticians can also help kids find trendy new frames.

It’s also important to ensure your family is up to date on routine vaccinations, especially during back-to-school season. Walk into your local Walmart Pharmacy for guidance on routine immunizations. In select provinces, you can sign up to be notified when appointments for flu vaccine become available.

So far this year, Walmart pharmacists and opticians have provided nearly 25,000 free health screenings, including blood pressure and blood glucose screenings, to Canadians during Wellness Days, making health care more accessible, and empowering customers to take their health into their own hands. The goal of Walmart’s Wellness Days is to help communities across the nation live better. Canadians are encouraged to prioritize their health by checking up on important health measurements, getting on track with preventative habits, and learning ways to improve their overall lifestyles to stay well.
