Kathryn Walt Hall's list of professional accomplishments prior to launching this excellent Napa label a decade ago with husband Craig Hall reads like success with a capital S. Among other things, she's been assistant city attorney for Berkeley, Calif., managing partner of an investment firm, co-founder of the North Texas Food Bank and the U.S. ambassador to Austria. Wine's in her blood, though. Her family started growing grapes in Mendocino in 1972. This is an uncommon trophy red from Napa, more enticingly earthy and gutsy than most, with just the right amount of funky barnyard wafting over lip-smacking fruit, luscious dark chocolate and espresso. Chewy-sticky tannins pull it all together. Worth cellaring for a decade or more. Perfect now for steak or roast beef. Various prices in Alberta.
