wine review

Munich's famous Oktoberfest, a sprawling annual extravaganza that runs this year from Sept. 19 till Oct. 4, is not the only chug-a-mug party in Bavaria. Fall beer festivals abound, including Herbstfest, which might be considered a dress rehearsal or, more quaintly, a local country cousin to the Big O. It takes place in late August and early September in Erding, the Bavarian town that the famous Erdinger brewery calls home. Pale-golden and cloudy the way a hefeweizen should be, this lively, biscuity brew, enjoyed the world over, is light-medium-bodied, with a creamy effervescence, notes of citrus, subtle banana and spices and a clean finish as crisp as autumn air.
