New York-based energy strategist Michael Tran has jumped from CIBC to RBC.

In his new role Mr. Tran, 32, will be covering supply and demand for the oil and gas industry. For the past six years, Mr. Tran worked as director of energy strategy with CIBC World Markets Corp. His position at RBC Dominion Securities Inc. will be director and commodities strategist. His first day was Monday.

"My role won't change significantly. But the platform is much larger and the client base is larger as well," Mr. Tran said in a telephone interview.

"I'm quite excited to be working with this franchise and given how strong it is and how deep the expertise is."

Mr. Tran will be working alongside the equities research team. Over the past 12 months RBC has hired 25 new analysts globally, spokesperson Gillian McArdle said.

Mr. Tran will also be working closely with Helima Croft, chief commodities strategist, who did a four year stint at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as an economic analyst and joined RBC in October, 2014.

"Energy markets are volatile and that's what makes this challenge right now that much more exciting," Mr. Tran added.

Mr. Tran is originally from Kitimat, B.C., and was educated at the University of Alberta. He'll be reporting to Howard Sangwine, head of commodity origination, who is based in Calgary.
