"The investigation led them ultimately to the Howard Johnson hotel," said Constable Sarah Diamond of Toronto Police. "Officers arriving on scene located a child in obvious distress."

Paramedics, who were called to the hotel about 7 p.m., took the girl to hospital, but she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

A man and a boy were also taken to hospital, police said, without providing information on their ages or relationship. Their injuries were deemed serious but not life-threatening, said Kim McKinnon, a spokeswoman for Toronto Emergency Medical Services.

A post-mortem examination was expected to be performed on Tuesday.
