The CBC has picked up the lion's share of industry prizes at the Gemini Awards honouring the best in homegrown television.

While it was a banner night for the CBC, the public broadcaster didn't face any organized competition from CTV News, the country's top-rated newscast, which removed itself from this year's Geminis.

CTV president Robert Hurst announced earlier this year that CTV News would not participate in the awards because the time involved in preparing entries was not worth the effort. Other CTV departments and specialty channels were eligible to vie for the awards, as were any CTV News employees who wished to submit entries on an individual basis.

Here are the winners of Gemini documentary, news and sports awards, announced Monday night in Toronto. Winners in other categories will be announced Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Gemini Awards gala will be broadcast by Global on Nov. 4.
