The adaption of the famed British comic is an improvement on the Sylvester Stallone version, but what wouldn't be? Set in a dystopian future, the movie stars Karl Urban (Bones in the Star Trek reboot) as Judge Dredd, the merciless lawman empowered to act as judge, jury and executioner as he and a rookie (Olivia Thirlby) clash with a drug lord inside a 200-storey apartment tower controlled by gangs. Some of the comic's satire remains, but most of it has been thrown aside to make room for ultraviolence, which is as gratuitous as the 3-D. Let's hope you like the sight of splattered blood. The slo-mo scenes, intended to mimic the effects of a drug called "Slo-mo" are too frequent, but the bigger problem is that the filmmakers neglect to establish a reason for why we're supposed to care about Judge Dredd, making the movie a flat experience.
