Rumours

CBC, 9 p.m.

Promoted as "a modern look at hip urban living," this new series has much more in common with that old Hollywood staple, the romantic comedy. Think Doris Day and Rock Hudson in Pillow Talk and Lover Come Back. The irritants in this oyster, neurotic Sarah (Amy Price-Francis) and opinionated Ben (David Haydn-Jones), worry each other into a pearl of a jam when they both unexpectedly land jobs at the same women's magazine. Under-qualified Sarah talks her way into the editor's job by pitching Ben -- whom she's never met -- as a male columnist commenting on female issues. And Ben, a real guy's guy, reluctantly accepts the gig only because he's just lost his job as a popular newspaper sportswriter. An imperious publisher encourages the aggro between the two, leaving Ben's sweetly flaky sister (Stephanie Anne Mills) and Sarah's breezy best friend (Sadie LeBlanc) to round off the dueling duo's sharp edges.
