Ottawa listed a $5.9-billion West Coast port expansion on Friday as a project of national interest, a designation that affords it a fast-track approval process.

The project, located in Delta, B.C., is aimed at increasing the port’s container capacity by 50 per cent and supporting up to $100-billion in annual trade, the federal government said in a statement.

This is the second major project to be given the designation under the Building Canada Act after the Pacific Link oil pipeline at the start of October. Its terminus would be in that same area of the port expansion south of Vancouver.

Roberts Bank Terminal 2 is expected to get a final investment decision by the middle of next year, the government said.

The project promises to deliver 17,000 jobs to the region, the government said.
