A man charged with the near-fatal beating of a Catholic bishop in Kamloops, B.C., remains in a secure psychiatric facility while a provincial court judge decides if he is criminally responsible.

John Bandura has admitted to the attack last October and will learn his fate Feb. 24 after the judge considers submissions from Crown and defence agreeing that Mr. Bandura was not responsible for his actions.

The 30-year-old is charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and mischief linked to the attack on Bishop David Monroe.

The priest was severely beaten and was hospitalized for 55 days following the incident in the rectory of Sacred Heart Cathedral last Oct. 22.

The court heard the man's family had repeatedly tried to have him admitted for psychiatric treatment in the days before the attack.
