One soldier is dead and four others are in serious condition in hospital after a training accident at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa, Ont., on Saturday morning.

It happened as a truck carrying 10 soldiers rolled over at the base training area.

The fatality was Gunner Arielle Keyes-Oliver of Ottawa, a member of 30th Field Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery.

Injured in the accident were Second Lieutenant Ryan MacIntyre, Bombardier Jordan Anstey, Bombardier Frederic Koch and Bombardier Alexander Mullaly. All the soldiers are members of 30th Field Regiment (RCA), a Reserve unit based in Ottawa.

Ms. Keyes-Oliver's family issued a statement through the Defence Department thanking friends for their support in their time of mourning.

The statement said Ms. Keyes-Oliver was proud to be a Canadian and proud to be in uniform.

It said she was a natural leader and concerned with everyone she came in contact with.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay also issued a statement saying he was "deeply saddened" by the loss of Ms. Keyes-Oliver.

Mr. MacKay added he wishes a quick recovery for the four other soldiers injured in the accident.

Base information officer Capt. Andrew Hennessy said the injured soldiers were transported to the Pembroke Hospital for treatment.

The accident is under investigation by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service.
