Cuba announced yesterday it would award Juan Miguel Gonzalez one of the highest state honours for his successful role in the seven-month custody fight over his six-year-old son, Elian.

Mr. Gonzalez, 31, a hero in his Caribbean homeland, is to receive the Order of Carlos Manuel de Cespedes.

President Fidel Castro, who held an unprecedented patriotic crusade to back Mr. Gonzalez's demand for Elian's return from the United States, is likely to give the award personally. Reuters
