Space shuttle Atlantis cruised to a smooth docking with the international space station yesterday, delivering supplies and setting the stage for the next big event -- a long-distance spacewalk.

A U.S. astronaut and Russian cosmonaut were paired up for today'smon gruelling climb up the space station to lay cable and install a boom for a navigation unit.

Edward Lu and Yuri Malenchenko planned to venture more than 30 metres from Atlantis's cargo bay, where the space station was anchored.

That's more than twice the distance to the top of the Hubble Space Telescope, where other spacewalking astronauts have worked. AP
