Vancouver International: North America’s best airport for eight years running. The Globe and Mail

A strong focus on good governance paid off for the Vancouver Airport Authority (VAA) last month when it received two excellence in governance awards from the Governance Professionals of Canada (GPC).

At an awards gala in Toronto, VAA, which manages Vancouver International Airport (YVR), won the best overall corporate governance award for a non-listed entity, and the award for best practices in enhancing boardroom diversity.

The awards honour organizations that demonstrate commitment to corporate governance and recognize efforts to increase diversity at the leadership level that lead to improvements in organizational outcomes.

YVR CEO and president Craig Richmond says recognition for promoting board diversity was a special honour.

"At YVR, we celebrate diversity and truly believe in inclusiveness. Those beliefs are inherent in everything we do, and to have our board recognized for diversity reflects our commitment to these values that lead to our record-setting growth and success," he adds.

YVR's board is led by a female chair, Mary Jordan, and has two female committee chairs and a total of five women on the 13-person body.

"The board identifies diversity as an essential element in attracting qualified directors and maintaining a high-functioning board," says Mr. Richmond. "YVR's commitment to diversity extends beyond the board of directors to the entire organization with strong targets for employment of women, people with a disability, visible minorities and Aboriginal persons."

Awards are nothing new to YVR. It has been named best airport in North America for eight years in a row, was awarded airport of the year at the CAPA awards, and most recently won the World Routes Marketing Awards.
