Winnipeg-based bus manufacturer New Flyer Industries Ltd. said yesterday that it will cut 500 jobs, largely because of a drop in orders. The company said delays in securing additional financing have also contributed to the need to trim its work force in Winnipeg by about one-third. Four hundred of those facing layoffs are members of the Canadian Auto Workers union. Even if more orders come in soon, a company spokesman told Canadian Press the current round of layoffs will take place as announced. New Flyer sells between 1,600 and 1,700 urban transit buses a year throughout North America, a business worth around $600-million.
