Tommy Denison won his second straight Hec Crighton Trophy as Canadian university football's outstanding player yesterday after another tremendous season as quarterback for the Queen's Golden Gaels. The native of Beamsville, Ont., becomes just the second player to win consecutive Hec Crighton Trophies. Saint Mary's Huskies quarterback Chris Flynn won three straight from 1988 through 1990. Denison beat out Laval quarterback Mathieu Bertrand and running backs Les Mullings of Saint Mary's and Jarred Winkel of Alberta for the award. Denison threw for 2,907 yards this year, the second-highest total in Canadian Interuniversity Sport history. He set the record last season with 3,001 passing yards. Yesterday was also a big day for the Simon Fraser Clan, who capped their most successful season with two awards. Linebacker Neil McKinlay won the Presidents' Trophy as the top defensive player, while offensive tackle Ibrahim Khan picked up the J. P. Metras Trophy as the CIS's top lineman. Montreal Carabins safety Maxime Gagnier received the Peter Gorman Trophy as the top rookie.
