Defending champion Michael Schmidt of Winnipeg finished third at the Quibica/AMF Bowling World Cup on Friday.

Schmidt lost 2-0 to Petter Hansen of Norway in the best-of-three semifinals. Hansen won the first game 289-241 then beat Schmidt 183-179 in the second match to advance to the final against Finland's Osku Palermaa.

Palermaa won the first game 258-182 and the third game 221-204 to capture the title. Hansen took the second game 216-183.

It was a tough day for Schmidt, who lost a bag that contained his passport on Thursday and spent most of Friday morning at the Canadian Embassy.

On the women's side, Diandra Asbaty of the U.S., defeated Lisa John of England in straight games to take the title.

Veronica Lalande-Lapointe of Ille Perrot, Que., finished 21st in qualifying earlier this week and failed to advance.
