Meryl Steep and Julia Roberts, nothing else matters tonight at TIFF as the two present August: Osage County for the first time at Roy Thomson Hall. Last night, Roberts enjoyed a quiet dinner at Grey Goose Soho House Toronto with four girlfriends. They were joined by Dermot Mulroney – a My Best Friend's Wedding … reunion! Disappointingly, no one started singing I Say A Little Prayer.

Later it was a British invasion on the rooftop at the private members club. Chiwetel Ejiofor, fresh off his acclaimed turn in 12 Years A Slave, accepted enthusiastic congratulations from Tom Hiddleston, who shared a table with Ralph Fiennes and received an affectionate hug from Ewan McGregor. X-Men co-stars and co-mutants James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender chatted at length, leaning against the north windows of the top floor as an exquisite Jessica Chastain, her long, fiery red hair falling down her back, sat in front of them. Chastain arrived at Pearson International airport earlier in the day with her three-legged dog Chaplin.

While the British dominated Soho House's rooftop, the Thompson Hotel rooftop, site of the Rush after-party sponsored by Grey Goose, was overtaken by Chris Hemsworth. He was supported by his two brothers, Liam and Luke, their parents and his wife Elsa Pataky. The Hemsworth brothers moved on from there to the Worldview party at Live At The Hive presented by SodaStream and were seen celebrating on the patio well past 3 a.m. Cyndi Lauper and Mireille Enos were also guests at Live At The Hive, but no one at the event had shoe game like Reese Witherspoon. Coming from the premiere of Devil's Knot, Witherspoon wore her hair swept to one side and a gorgeous pair of green suede pumps.

On another rooftop in the city, Witherspoon's ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal and his new girlfriend, Sports Illustrated model Alyssa Miller, were inseparable at the after-party for Enemy hosted by Hugo Boss at The Chase restaurant in the Financial District. Gyllenhaal and Miller, ridiculously attractive together, seem very much in love. At one point, she had both arms wrapped around his shoulders, with his hand resting on her leg. When he tenderly rubbed a piece of food off her bottom lip, it was like a fragrance ad being played out in real life right in front of me.

And finally, something for the Friday Night Lights fans out there. Tim Riggins was in the house at Brassai for the Grand Seduction after-party. I couldn't resist asking Taylor Kitsch, who plays Riggs, whether or not a movie version of the beloved TV show was going to happen.

"No [expletive] way," he answered emphatically. "We're all too old and weathered."

Texas, it would seem, is not forever.
