Six books will share $45,000 in prize money in the 14th annual Mr. Christie's Book Award. The award is open to Canadian children's books in both official languages, in three age categories. Three English-language book winners were announced Tuesday.

Alan Cumyn's The Secret Life of Owen Skye won for the best Canadian work of fiction for readers age 8 to 11. Author Anne Laurel Carter of Toronto and illustrators Alan and Lea Daniel of Kitchener, Ont., won for Under a Prairie Sky, deemed the best book for readers aged seven and younger. And in the young-adult category, Joan Clark of St. John's won for The Word Home, a work of historical fiction set in 1926 in Newfoundland. French-language book winners will be announced in Montreal on Friday. Staff
