Brendan Healy is the new artistic director of Buddies in Bad Times, the Toronto-based theatre's board of directors announced yesterday.

An associate artist at Crow's Theatre, Healy, 34, is one of the city's best-regarded young directors and the 2009 winner of the Pauline McGibbon Award for early-career artists.

Healy, who reportedly beat out well-known playwright Brad Fraser and Dora-winning director Ed Roy for the position, takes over the artistic direction of the company at a trying time in its 30-year history. Last season, a budget shortfall led the theatre to cancel two shows and hold fundraisers in their place. Staff
