Itron: 3 Key Takeaways for Long-Term Investors

Motley Fool - 1 hour ago

Key Points

  • Non-GAAP operating income increased 20% year over year on 3% revenue growth.

  • Annual recurring revenue expanded 25% year over year to $423 million.

  • Management raised full-year non-GAAP earnings per share guidance to $6.72 to $6.82.

On its third-quarter 2026 earnings call, held on Oct. 27, 2026, Itron(NASDAQ:ITRI) announced that revenue returned to year-over-year growth at $599 million. Utilities face simultaneous operational pressures from power load growth and aging infrastructure. Adding software intelligence to existing networks gives power companies a quick way to gain capacity.

Three things management said stand out.

1. Operational Efficiency Drives Structural Earnings Growth

Itron increased non-GAAP (adjustments that exclude one-time costs to show core operational performance) operating income by 20% on 3% revenue growth. Higher-margin software sales and operational discipline raised the baseline performance above previous industrial cycles.

Last quarter, we delivered record gross margin on lower revenue, This quarter, growth returned with strong margins, Non GAAP operating income grew 20% on 3% growth. That is structural. The product of several years of commercial and operational work not an industrial cycle.
-- Thomas L. Deitrich, President and Chief Executive Officer

2. Forward Compatibility Protects Market Share

Replacing utility hardware requires heavy capital spending that power companies cannot easily afford. Through OpenWay Forward (a software program allowing utilities to run new applications on existing hardware), Itron enables clients to add features while preserving existing field assets.

Certainly, it is a very strong moat. If a customer really needed to rip and replace underappreciated capital, that is very difficult from a financial point of view.
-- Thomas L. Deitrich, President and Chief Executive Officer

3. Software Endpoints Convert Hardware Into High-Margin Recurring Revenue

Grid edge endpoints (smart grid devices deployed in the field) act as hardware entry points for security and analytics applications. Deploying these units expanded annual recurring revenue (ARR, predictable subscription and service revenue) by 25% year over year.

Our applications software, analytics, and services portfolio drove annual recurring revenue growth to approximately 25% year over year, accelerating from 21% last quarter. Endpoints become platforms, and platforms become recurring revenue.
-- Thomas L. Deitrich, President and Chief Executive Officer

Looking Ahead

Utility demand for grid modernization expands, pushing order backlog to $4.3 billion. Capital allocation focuses on supply chain flexibility and pricing discipline to capture multiyear infrastructure investments.

We continue to position Itron to benefit from a long term durable market opportunities to provide solutions for our customers as they modernize their infrastructure responsibly and affordably
-- Joan S. Hooper, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Long-term expansion relies on converting standard hardware deployments into software-driven grid platforms. While utility procurement schedules remain uneven due to state regulatory calendars, fundamental demand for network visibility stays intact.

The modernization of energy and water infrastructure is a long term structural trend quarterly timing may move. The underlying need will not. Itron is the intelligence layer of those systems helping customers unlock capacity, improve reliability, enhance safety, and get more from their infrastructure.
-- Thomas L. Deitrich, President and Chief Executive Officer
